Ciudad Quesada (San Carlos)

Located on the northwestern flank of Poas Volcano, Ciudad Quesada is the capital of San Carlos Province, and is known to all as San Carlos.  Not a tourism destination in its own right, the beautiful mountain city is bustling and prosperous, the center of Costa Rica’s dairy industry.

First populated by indigenous people that fled encroaching colonists to its secluded location, it was formally settled by the invaders in the seventeenth century.  It sprang to national prominence in 1955 as the staging point of an insurrection against the Republic of Costa Rica’s founding father, Pepe Figueres, sponsored by aggressors Nicaragua and Venezuela.

Promptly quashed under international backlash and national forces, San Carlos returned to agricultural and urban industry.  A clean and beautiful provincial capital, Quesada is a gateway to Arenal and Poás Volcanos, many regional hot springs and spas, Juan Castro Blanco National Park, and the nation’s largest private reserve, Children’s Eternal Rainforest.

While in town be sure to visit the La Marina Zoo, an animal rehabilitation facility, and if traveling through in April be sure to time your travel in order to enjoy the regionally famous Feria del Ganado, a town festival celebrating the dairy cattle and ranching heritage.
