Puerto Viejo is the ideal place to get a taste of Costa Rica’s Afro-Caribbean culture, cuisine and lifestyle. Located on a beautiful beach with good snorkeling, Puerto Viejo is packed with restaurants, bars, shops, souvenir sellers and tour operators, and it offers the conveniences of larger grocery stores and two banks.
The famous Salsa Brava surf break is known for breaking surfers’ boards and bones, or worse. Puerto Viejo makes an excellent jumping-off point to some of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica, just south of town (Cocles, Chiquita, Punta Uva, Manzanillo), and Cahuita National Park lies just to the north.
