Sámara

Sámara is a gem of a beach town — small enough to lack the crowds of a Jacó or Tamarindo, large enough to have a supermarket and bank, accessible by good roads and boasting plenty of things to see and do. Best of all for families with children, its beach is one of the safest for swimming on the Nicoya Peninsula because it slopes very gradually and is sheltered by an island and headlands that make the currents here gentle. (Downside: This is not a surfing mecca.)

Sámara has long been popular with vacationing Ticos and, while it doesn’t have luxury mega-resorts, it has plenty of affordable places to stay. Highly recommended as a “starter town” for first-time Costa Rica visitors, Sámara is centrally located on the Nicoya coast and makes a good base from which to explore Santa Teresa and Montezuma to the south or Nosara and Tamarindo to the north, with the international airport in Liberia less than three hours away.
