San Gerardo de Rivas

Situated at the base of Costa Rica’s highest mountain, Chirripó, San Gerardo is located at 4500 feet at the end of the road about 45 minutes from San Isidro.  Boasting spring like temperatures year round in the valley of the roaring Chirripo River, San Gerardo is primarily a jumping off point for mountaineers that summit Chirripo on two- and three-day guided professionally outfitted tour packages.

For those not committed to the mountaineering of the world’s 18th most prominent peak, the area boasts a plethora of guided tours, canyoning, thermal springs, trout fishing, bird watching, and has a vibrant community of expats many of whom have ecotourism activities and permaculture and organic gardening.  There are plenty of budget and mid-priced hotels, cabinas, and lodging, a variety of eateries and tour outfitters.  A great detour from the Panamerican for those with rental cars, less so for bus travelers not set on summiting Chirripó.
